Thanks to all who attended the 3rd Annual Frosty Mug Race last Saturday. For those who couldn't attend, we hope to see you next year.

Although conditions were light to variable, the forecasted rain held off and after a short postponement we were able to complete four races. After racing we gathered for brats, dogs, corn on the cob and frosty refreshments. Frosty Mug Awards were presented to the top three finishers and we set the date for the 4th Annual event, October 2, 2010.

Press Release:

On Saturday October 3rd Irish Boat Shop hosted its third annual “Frosty Mug Laser Race” on Little Traverse Bay in Harbor Springs. The event attracted 10 racers from around the state. Although there was no frost on the ground, temperatures were cool and winds were light. Racing was scheduled to begin at 1:00, but was postponed until 2:30 due to the light winds. The rain held off and the wind finally filled in from the south/southwest at about 4 to 6 knots allowing us to begin the competition.

The event consisted of four individual races with low point scoring. Thomas LaBelle sailing out of Rochester Hills finished with three bullets and a second place for a total of 5 points. He took home top honors and the first place Frosty Mug Trophy. Second place with 9 points, only one point ahead of third, went to Pete Comfort of Traverse City. The third place trophy with 10 points was awarded to last year’s winner Mark Lyons also from Traverse City.

The Laser is a mere 14-feet long, boasting 76 sq. ft. of sail area, it has only four strings to pull, but its simplicity breeds an addiction that makes it the most popular dinghy in the world. The laser has been heralded as “the greatest race boat ever”. Designed in 1969 by the legendary Bruce Kirby, the Laser was light years ahead of her time. As of March 1, 2008 there have been over 190,000 Lasers built with fleets in 122 countries. The Laser is fast and fun, it’s affordable, easy to maintain, rig and transport. Designed to be single-handed with an optimal crew weight of 180 pounds. Laser Performance, the manufacturer of Laser, also offers a radial rig, which has a shorter, and more flexible lower mast section, 14 sq. ft. less sail area and a lower center of effort. This makes the boat more manageable for lighter weight men, women, seniors and juniors alike.
